Das Lost Phone
Performance (video, approx. 5mins, 2010)
Helen Turner and Ralph Fuller transmitted the sound of a transitional space in between England and Germany by broadcasting a live phone conversation, between a mobile phone in a parcel destined for St Helens (UK) and a mobile phone in a gallery in Stuttgart, for the duration of the parcel’s trip. The live transmission commenced when the parcel, collected by Fed-Ex pick from the private view, began its journey to St Helens. The work reveals a borderless space that is concealed from public view and attempts to make this restricted aspect of society public.

Dislocation, Dislocation, Dislocation
Performance (video, approx. 5mins, 2010)
A live performance addressed the artist’s experience of dislocation and alienation following her move, as a child, to Belgium where three national languages are in use. By using the structure of chain reaction to repetitively translate an extract from ‘The Politics of English as a World Language’ by Christian Mair, the artist continuously dislocates meaning in order to create.

Born in Frankfurt, Helen Turner resides in London and predominantly makes sound installations that discuss the boundaries between the public and the private, as well as feelings of dislocation and transition. She studied Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London and later at The Cooper Union, New York. Previous shows include ‘LDN/BRU’ (Brussels, 2009), ‘Das Lost Phone’ (Stuttgart, 2010), and ‘Border Infection’ (London 2010).
