Le grand finale! Orchestra Baobab is one of Africa’s foremost music icons and authors of one of the world’s most sublime and clearly distinctive pop sound. The band was founded in 1970 and already at the time integrated Afro-Cuban rhythms and Portuguese Creole melodies with Congolese rumba, high life and a range of the local styles of Senegal in their music. It is largely thanks to the Orchestra Baobab that the capital Dakar has become one of the world’s most vibrant music metropolises – and the band dominated the music scene for more than a decade. While Baobab found themselves marginalized by the revolution that they raised and then rejected in 1985, an emerging international interest led to the group re-emerging in 2001. Since then, the Orchestra Baobab has not had a free moment. In total, they have released some thirty albums, won all the prizes you can dream of as an artist (BBC Award, Grammy, etc.) and even performed at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo. The baobab tree is extremely fascinating for all who have traveled in Africa. If cut down, it grows up again.
