HOUSE OF WIN WIN | 25 NOVEMBER 2009 | 20.00-23.00
“Vuk is a Finnish-American artist whose unique music carries sonic strains that weave themselves into a rich, colorful tapestry of experimental rock, Balkan vocal music, meticulously layered organ harmonies, exuberantly inventive instrumentation and polyrhythmic walls of Vodou percussion. Her songs explore inner, fictional landscapes sculpted by dreams, sex, trauma, death and spiritual ecstasy. Live, Vuk expands into a percussion-and-organ-driven trio, and the sound of the pump organ takes center stage next to Vuk’s startling voice.”

VICTIMS & MARTYRS::
Many recent debates on questions of power and justice have occurred within the frame of a discourse on victims and martyrs. Not only have many movements, authorities, and agencies claimed that they are or that they defend victims and martyrs, but critiques have been made that claim that the allusion to various groups’ status as victims is often used to legitimize violence and exercises of force that could never be defended in other contexts where justice is supposedly a primary consideration.

:

This reorientation, in which questions of power, justice and forms of exploitation turn into a discourse concerned with identifying victims seems to have certain serious political consequences.

:

What does it mean that, for example, a person who is subordinate in a power hierarchy feels forced to insist that they neither are nor want to be represented as a victim? What does it mean to die a martyr in a secular capitalist system where religious fundamentalism is considered to be a sign of lunacy? Are there heroes in a society of victims or are there only martyrs? And in what ways can a subject acting from a position of victimhood challenge oppressive power structures in a multicultural society?

:

As much today as throughout history, martyrs and victims have been visible in different forms and in various contexts within cultural productions and the media. Increasingly often the conditions under which the suicide bomber, the sex worker and other members of persecuted groups work and exist have been dealt with in art, discussed in research, and themetized in stage productions. However, the consequences of this focus have not been analyzed adequately.

:

The goal of this project is to illuminate and inspire cultural interventions that exist in the field of tension between political victim’s movements and philosophical positions critical to discourses of victim identification.

:

Is there a risk that the concept of human rights loses its status when compassion becomes synonymous with pity and when it is unclear what violence brings with it in a society that has become increasingly occupied with protecting and historicizing its victims?

:

COURSE::
During the autumn of 2009 the Clandestino Institute – Gothenburg’s alternative university – will be running a course program dealing with these themes. Many of these questions were addressed during the conference Offers and Martyrs – Political Interventions, which took place during the 7th Clandestino Festival in June 2009. The course is independent from the conference, however, and requires no prior knowledge.

:

ARTISTIC INTERVENTIONS::
At some point in 2010/2011, the project will result in an exhibition curated collaboratively by Aleksander Motturi, Edda Manga and Gothenburg Konsthall. More information about this will be sent out in a separate bulletin.

:

INFO ::
The course is free and will take place over approximately ten evening sessions. It will be geared towards artists, students and cultural workers widely conceived. An obligatory application should be submitted by the introductory lecture on September 2nd at the latest. For the moment information is available in this newsletter and on our website. We also have created a separate Facebook event in order to spread information

:

APPLICATION ::

TRINH T. MINH-HA EXTRAINSATT VIDEOVERK

To paint [a body] is to continue the line; one that goes in all
directions at the same time and spreads like an infinite thread of
blood
.”  -Jean-Paul Bourdier

body001A 20 min digital video Bodies of the Desert by Trinh T Minh-ha released with the book of photography Bodyscapes by Jean-Paul Bourdier will be showed at the Clandestino Festival club stage on Friday June 12th  20.00-22.00 hrs. Music performance by The Construction of Ruins Music Designed by Trinh T. Minh-ha.

In the desert, the mind forgets but the body remembers.

In the desert, we find more than we seek.

Far from being a mere haven of peace, it offers a site where, drunken in the infinity of naked earth, we let the Nowhere and the Other surface in us.

To quench our thirst, we travel far and physically strain ourselves to the limits, but what we set out to drink often turns out to be not quite the same as the water we learn to know from within our skin,
flesh and bone.
