BABYFATHER

The indefinable Dean Blunt continues to confound his audience, and up until recently it was still unclear who was behind the new project Babyfather. But last fall the secret was revealed when a 25 minute mixtape titled Babyfather apeared on Dean Blunt’s somewhat cryptic Soundcloud account Jesuschrist3000ADHD.

Blunt’s breakthrough was the duo Hype Williams, where Blunt together with Inga Copeland created what can be described as artpop, experimental pop, lo-fi house, and noise collage. That adventure was followed by three albums under his own name, as well as a number of tracks and LPs—among others the ten-track album Stone Island (2013), recorded in a hotel room in Moscow released for free online.

In Babyfather, Dean Blunt leaves artpop to focus on hiphop and dub, still experimenal but without the pop overtones of Hype Williams. Blunt’s mixtape from last fall features collaborations with DJ Escrow and Gassman D, and the track Meditiation—released earlier this year—was produced by Acra, famous for his Kanye West productions. On April 1st Babyfather released a new album through Hyperdub, BBF.
