Clandestino Festival presents not only eclectic music from all over the world but also visual art that goes beyond borders, both territorially and in terms of art forms. Over the past years of our history, we have collaborated with such artists as Trinh T Minh-ha, Hito Steyerl, and Rhizomatiks, to name a few, and during the previous edition of the festival, we presented the Sahab Museum – a virtual museum with art from Gaza. From 2024, our ambition is for the art programme to become a permanent and important part of our festival.
For the upcoming edition of Clandestino Festival, 29 May – 1st June, we invite artists who would answer our theme I Am Not Your Angel, based on Walter Benjamin’s idea of the “angelus novus,” and who would like to initiate a dialog with angels of history and place it in a part of Gothenburg historically associated with crossing the Atlantic and migration – Stigberget.
We are looking for projects that would correspond to the topic and the place in their form or content, those that would fit into the outdoor space around Stigbergtorget, or those we could show indoors. We are interested in art that will activate both the place and the subject matter.
We are looking for a variety of works – installations that can be shown in a gallery space or other interiors, projects that will fit into the outdoor space, but also events, performances, and public programs. Proposals may relate to existing work, projects in progress, or new work or events that will be inspired by the idea of the festival.
The selected artists will receive a salary of SEK 9,000 according to the MU-agreement. On top of the salary, we also cover basic costs for installation and technical needs that can be supplied by our venue partners. However, it should be noted that we cannot provide financial compensation for the production of new works.
Application requirements:
– artist statement up to 500 characters
– proposal for a work related to the open call up to 1500 characters
– 1 page CV
– images of 3-5 works from the past 5 years; if included, videos or sound work should be lined in the pdf (up to 5 min overal)
Attach the application as one singular PDF document of no more than 5MB.
Send your application to: press@clandestinofestival.org by 15 December.
