Tunisia hasn’t just produced this year’s winner of the Nobel Peace Prize but is also the home to some of Northern Africa’s most interesting music collaborations. Hiya Wal Âlam, who we have seen touring with Olof Dreijer (The Knife), is just one of many new artists breaking ground and challenging traditional sounds by deep exploration. With a background in the alternative music scene, Deena Abdelwahed merges innovative, experimental elements into electronic dance music. By combining urban rhythms with a personal style, her music offers an energetic and unconventional dance experience.
Deena Abdelwahed first started off as a jazz singer for two years before she became a member of the collective World Full of Bass in 2011. Today she performs mostly with the collective Arabstazy, where the video artist and photographer Wafa (WAF) Benromdan is also a member. Her debut EP is in production and will be released by the French label Fullridge Music.
WAF’s visual creations have been described as a a magical substance, inviting the audience to open doors to impossible arenas, to fragments of dreams we’ve forgotten that we had.
