With one foot in Mali and the other in France, Midnight Ravers want to introduce the world to a new kind of Electro-Mandingo. But it’s not about world music nor ethnic sampling. The group, consisting of musicians from France and Mali, strive through their artistic expressions of music, drawing, and video towards a globalisation free of economic structures and instead based on real human exchange.
With an clear sensitivity, Midnight Ravers create an intense but at the same time subtle electronic atmosphere, heightened further by Fatim Kouyate’s beautiful, sad chant. Adding Assaba Drame on the ngon and Madou Sidiki Diabates masterly Kora skills Midnight Ravers creates a soft, graceful, trance-inspired sound, making the listening experience a sheer joy.
While some of the songs on the album SouKono (Jarring Effects) lead one to think of Erik Enocksson’s pensive fllm scores (Farväl Falkenberg, Apan, Man tänker sitt), where others have a much higher level of energy, giving the musicians a chance to let loose.
